The fundamental Platonic philosophical responsibility of the care of the soul, the ceaseless cultivation of the human life and spirit, has taken many expressions throughout the history of philosophy, including Husserl’s appeal in The Crisis or Jasper’s Idea of The University. This perennial task demands specific philosophical reflections and concrete humanistic upheavals in each peculiar historical period and cultural setting. The quality of education and educational institutions as well as academic space and agency influence and form fundamental individual and communal orientations within a society. This is why we would like to dedicate the fifth volume of the Yearbook on History and Interpretation of Phenomenology to phenomenological reflections on education and the idea of the university, especially considering current societal and cultural movements and phenomena (e.g., the rise of nationalism and fundamentalism, the necessity of intercultural and interreligious dialogue, the refugee crisis and our forms of response, etc.). The Center for Phenomenological Studies at Trnava University in Trnava encourages phenomenological, critical, and interdisciplinary approaches to philosophical research on the system, current direction, and quality of Western education (including the problem of the devaluation, quantifiability, and marketing policies in the humanities) and its influences on personal and communal value orientations and its wider global effects.
